Molde.

The town of roses and jazz, with a view of 222 mountain peaks from the hill behind it.

Molde is a modern little town with an old-fashioned view. You step off the ship almost straight into the centre, and the big sight is the one across the water: a wall of mountains, 222 peaks of them if you count from the hill above town. Walk up for it, ride up for it, or take a bus out to the Atlantic Road and see the coast instead.

Atlantic Road trips

A road that hops from island to island on low bridges right out on the open ocean. Most trips from Molde take around three and a half hours, which fits a normal port day.

About 100 metres from the town centre. There's no shuttle and no terminal building, and you don't need either. Tour buses park by the quay.

What's worth seeing, and why

Free

The harbour and the town centre

30 min

Molde calls itself the town of jazz and roses. Have a wander along the harbour and through the centre, and look across the fjord. That's the view the whole town is built to face.

The big one

Varden viewpoint on foot

165 min

A marked trail called the Green Corridor starts at the quay and climbs through Reknes Park and past the Romsdal Museum to Varden, 407 metres up. Count on about an hour and a half up and 45 minutes down. From the top you can see 222 peaks, most of them over 1,000 metres. The Vardestua restaurant at the top is open roughly from May to October.

Local tip

Not up for the climb? It's about ten minutes by car or taxi, and the bus tour below stops there too.

The Romsdal Museum

75 min

An open-air museum on the old Reknes farm, founded in 1912, with more than 40 old buildings and a recreated town street. It's on the way up to Varden, so you can combine the two.

The fisheries museum on Hjertøya

180 min

A summer boat takes ten minutes from the harbour to the island of Hjertøya, where 15 old buildings show coastal and fishing life around 1850. Only open June to August. Check the boat times against your all aboard.

The Atlantic Road

210 min

Low bridges and causeways hopping from island to island on the open coast. On a calm day it's pretty. On a wild day it's better, as long as you watch from the bus. Trips from Molde usually take around three and a half hours.

Docking on a Sunday or a holiday?

Most shops in Norway close on Sundays and public holidays. Museums, cafés and restaurants in the centre usually stay open, often with shorter hours. Here are the public holidays for the next twelve months:

Ship excursion or on your own?

Molde itself is easy on your own: the town, the museum and the walk to Varden all start at the quay. For the Atlantic Road you need transport, so book a trip or take the ship's excursion. Trollstigen is possible from Molde, but the round trip takes seven to eight hours, so leave it for the Åndalsnes call if you have one.
