Skjolden.

The innermost village on the Sognefjord, below the highest mountain pass in Northern Europe.

Skjolden sits at the very end of the Lustrafjord, the innermost branch of the Sognefjord, Norway's longest and deepest fjord. Your ship has sailed as far up the Sognefjord as it goes. The village is small and quiet, and the reasons to come are around it: a stave church on the UNESCO list, a waterfall that drops 218 metres, and a road that climbs into the mountains of Jotunheimen.

Fjord RIB adventure from Skjolden

A fast boat out on the Lustrafjord, starting less than a kilometre from the pier. Short, wet and a lot of fun.

Which quay is your ship at?

Your ship's daily programme tells you.

Skjolden cruise pier

Walk · 15 min to the centre

About a kilometre from the village, with a terminal and toilets on the pier. There's no shuttle and no public transport from the quay, so you walk or take a tour.

Skjolden tender pier

Tender boat · 10 min to the centre

If your ship anchors, it lies about 400 metres out. Add the tender queue at both ends of the day.

How much time you really have

Time in port, minus the trip into town and back, and 30 minutes' margin before all aboard.

What's worth seeing, and why

Free

Sengaberget viewpoint

90 min

Skjolden's most visited viewpoint, about 2.5 km from the pier. A good first walk while the tour buses fill up, and a chance to see the fjord from above after a morning of seeing it from the deck.

Free

Wittgenstein's cottage

90 min

The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein spent several years working in a cottage here, about 3 km from the pier. It was rebuilt in 2018. You don't need to have read him to enjoy the walk.

A RIB boat on the Lustrafjord

90 min

The boats leave less than a kilometre from the pier. Fast, bumpy, and a very different view of the fjord from the one you had on deck.

The big one

Urnes stave church

180 min

Norway's oldest stave church and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, about 30 km away by road. There are guided tours every day in summer, and a café and visitor centre next door.

See trips from Skjolden

Feigefossen waterfall

120 min

A waterfall 16 km from Skjolden with a free fall of 218 metres. Ask whether your tour stops here on the way.

The Sognefjellet road

300 min

A national scenic route that climbs from the fjord into Jotunheimen National Park and tops out at 1,434 metres, the highest mountain pass in Northern Europe. Check that the road is open on your date before you book.

See trips from Skjolden

Nigardsbreen glacier

360 min

A glacier in Jostedalsbreen National Park, with guided glacier walks and a national park centre, Breheimsenteret. It's a long drive up a valley from Skjolden, so only for long stops.

Docking on a Sunday or a holiday?

Most shops in Norway close on Sundays and public holidays. Museums, cafés and restaurants in the centre usually stay open, often with shorter hours. Here are the public holidays for the next twelve months:

Ship excursion or on your own?

The walks to the viewpoint and Wittgenstein's cottage are easy on your own. Everything else needs a car, and there's no public transport from the pier, so book a tour or take the ship's excursion. The ship's trip to Urnes is often the simplest way to get there and back in time.
