Cruise port guide · Northern Norway

Tromsø.

The big town of the Arctic. Which quay you get decides how you start your day.

Tromsø has two cruise quays, and they give you two very different starts. At Prostneset you step off right in the centre. At Breivika you're around four kilometres north of it, and you'll need a shuttle or a bus. After that, it's a compact town with a lot to see, and a cable car for the view.

Summer boat trips from Tromsø

In summer the light hangs around all evening. A boat trip out of the harbour shows you the islands and the mountains from the water. Pick one that's back well before all aboard.

Which quay is your ship at?

Your ship's daily programme tells you.

Prostneset

Walk · 5 min to the centre

Right in the city centre. The main street and the harbour promenade are about 5 to 10 minutes away on foot.

Breivika

Free shuttle bus · 25 min to the centre

Around 4 km north of the centre, too far to walk for most people. Cruise lines usually run shuttle buses, and there are city buses too. Check your cruise line's information, plus the current timetable, before you rely on one.

How much time you really have

Time in port, minus the trip into town and back, and 30 minutes' margin before all aboard.

What's worth seeing, and why

The big one

Fjellheisen cable car

90 min

Up to Mount Storsteinen for the full overview of Tromsø, the sound and the mountains around it. It's across the bridge from the centre, so allow time to get there.

Grab a cable car ticket

Polaria

60 min

A hands-on place about Arctic nature, with live seals, king crabs and interactive exhibits. Good if the weather turns.

The Arctic Cathedral

60 min

You can see it from the docks, looking across the sound past the pillars of the Tromsø Bridge. It's been called Tromsø's lighthouse. Time here includes getting across.

The Polar Museum

60 min

The story of the trappers and polar expeditions that set out from this town. A proper slice of Arctic history.

Free

A walk along the docks

30 min

Walk along the harbour promenade from the centre and look across the sound. No ticket needed.

Book these before you arrive

Summer boat trips from Tromsø

Sailboats and small cruises from the harbour in the centre. Check the length and when it's back.

Everything else in Tromsø

Fjord trips, hikes and wildlife. Most are made for a full day, so read the times carefully.

Coming back in winter?

Tromsø is one of the best places in Norway for the northern lights. A summer cruise stop won't show you any, since it doesn't get dark enough. Our winter guide explains when and where to go.

Docking on a Sunday or a holiday?

Most shops in Norway close on Sundays and public holidays. Museums, cafés and restaurants in the centre usually stay open, often with shorter hours. Here are the public holidays for the next twelve months:

Ship excursion or on your own?

From Prostneset you can easily do Tromsø on your own. From Breivika you can too, as long as you check the shuttle or bus first and leave a good margin for the trip back. A ship excursion makes the most sense for trips out of town.
