Winter guide · Tromsø

Last day in Tromsø.

Out of the room by eleven, ship at half past one in the morning. Here's how to fill the gap without dragging a suitcase round town.

It's a classic Tromsø puzzle. Your Airbnb or hotel wants you out in the morning, and your coastal ship doesn't leave until the middle of the night. That's a long day in the dark with all your winter gear. The good news is that the terminal is in the middle of town, it has lockers, and there's plenty to do within walking distance. You just need to know the opening hours.

The short answer

Lockers in the terminal, the city by day, the cable car at night.

You don't need a hotel room just for your bags. The Prostneset terminal, where the coastal ships dock, has lockers and is open from 06:30 until 01:30. Drop everything in the morning, collect it before the waiting room closes, and walk on board.

Book a room for the day only if you want a shower and a nap before a night departure. On a honeymoon, that might not be the worst idea.

How the day can go

This assumes a ship leaving around 01:30, like Havila's southbound departure. Check your own ticket, because the times depend on the company and the direction.

  1. Leave the bags

    On footMorning

The lockers are on the first floor of the Prostneset terminal, near the exit to the bus terminal, and the building opens at 06:30. Another option is Tromsø Luggage Storage in Strandskillet 3, which is self-service around the clock, though you need an access code to get into the building for part of the night.

    Local tip

Capacity can be limited at busy times. If you have big cases or a lot of ski gear, get there early.

  2. Seals and the polar story

    On footLate morning

Polaria is open 10:00 to 17:00, and the seals are fed and trained at 10:30 and 12:30 every day, so aim for one of those. The Polar Museum tells the story of the trappers and expeditions that set out from Tromsø.

  3. Make the most of the light

    On footMidday

In the polar night, roughly 27 November to 15 January, the sun doesn't rise at all, but the sky still shifts between pink, purple and deep blue in the middle of the day. From mid-January the light starts coming back. Either way, midday is the time for a walk along the harbour.

  4. Up the cable car

Bus, taxi or a long walkEvening

Fjellheisen runs until midnight every day, and the café at the top is open until 23:30. Bus 26 goes from Torgsenteret in the centre, a taxi takes about ten minutes, and walking takes around 45. The cabin is up in a few minutes, and from 421 metres the whole city is lit up below you. If the northern lights are out, this is a good place to be.

  5. Collect the bags and board

    On footBefore 01:30

Get back to the terminal in good time. The bags must be collected before the waiting room closes, and opening a locker after closing needs a security guard and costs extra. The ships dock at Prostneset, so once you have your bags you're already there.

Lockers are enough if

  • You're happy to be out and about all day
  • You've got normal suitcases, not a ski bag each
  • You'd rather spend the money on dinner

Book a room if

  • You want to sleep before a night on a ship
  • You're travelling with children
  • The forecast is a storm and you'd rather stay in

Bags and a base

Luggage storage in the centre

If the terminal lockers are full, there are other places in the centre to leave bags for the day.

A room near the terminal

A base for the day, a shower and a nap before boarding. Look for one within walking distance of Prostneset.

For an earlier night

A northern lights chase, on a different night

Book it for a night when you don't have a ship to catch. See below for why.

Why not chase the northern lights on the last night?

It's tempting, but the timing is against you. Most chases leave Tromsø around 18:00 and last five to seven hours, sometimes as long as nine, and the guides go where the clear skies are. There's no fixed time to be back. With a ship leaving at 01:30 and a terminal that closes at the same time, that's a gamble you don't want to take on the last night of a honeymoon.

Do the chase earlier in the trip. On the last evening, go up the cable car and keep an eye on the sky, and have another look from the deck once the ship is out of the city lights.

Which ships leave late?

Both Havila and Hurtigruten sail the coastal route and dock at Prostneset, but they don't keep the same times. Havila's southbound ship arrives at 23:45 and leaves at 01:30, and its northbound ship is in from 14:15 to 18:15. Hurtigruten's northbound ship leaves Tromsø in the early evening and the southbound one arrives late in the evening. Your ticket has the times that count.
