Winter guide · Tromsø

Tromsø in 3 days.

Three days, two sleds, one very cold boat trip, and as many nights under the sky as the weather allows.

A lot of people come to Tromsø in winter for three or four nights, with a list of four things: the northern lights, huskies, whales and reindeer. You can't do all of them in three days without running yourself into the snow. Here's an order that works, and the one rule that matters most: book the northern lights for your first night, not your last.

The short answer

Northern lights first. Everything else around them.

The weather decides whether a chase goes out or comes home empty, so put it on your first evening. If it's cancelled or cloudy, you still have two more nights to try again. Book the daytime trips around it.

Whales or reindeer on day three depends on the month. Whale safaris usually run from early November to the end of January. Outside that window, the reindeer are the better pick.

The plan

Times are rough guides. Daytime in midwinter is short, and in the polar night, from about 27 November to 15 January, the sun doesn't rise at all. Plan the daylight trips for the middle of the day.

  1. Day 1. Town, seals and the first chase

On foot, then by tourArrival day

Walk the centre and head for Polaria, open 10:00 to 17:00. The seals are fed at 10:30 and 12:30, so time it if you can. In the evening, the northern lights chase. Most leave around 6 pm and last five to seven hours.

    Local tip

Arriving late? Swap day 1 and day 2 around, but keep the chase as early in the trip as you can.

  2. Day 2. Huskies, then the cable car

Tour, then bus 26Midday and evening

A husky trip on Kvaløya takes about four hours, including the 30-minute drive each way. Some include warm clothes and a hot meal. In the evening, take the Fjellheisen cable car up to 421 metres. It runs until midnight, and if the first chase was cloudy, it's a free second chance from above the city.

  3. Day 3. Whales or reindeer

TourAll day, or half a day

From early November to the end of January, a whale safari is a full day up north, where orcas and humpbacks have gathered around Skjervøy and Kvænangen in recent years. Outside that window, or if a full day on a boat sounds like too much, go to a Sami reindeer camp. It takes about four hours, with a short sled ride and a hot lunch.

  4. The spare night

    However you likeLast evening

Keep the last evening free. If the first chase was a washout, this is when you book another. If it wasn't, have a beer in town and look up on the way home.
